Troubleshooting: vCenter Upgrade/Migrate Procedure

“Some of the most critical services for organisations running virtualised services are the vCenter or Hyper-V hosts themselves,” says  James, our virtualisation expert, who recently helped a major organisation upgrade/migrate its vCenter, successfully.  But it was not without its challenges.  He explains:

“From time to time we can find ourselves running increasingly difficult operating systems hosting critical services. This can be due to a number of reasons, such as operating system lifecycles, oversights, human resourcing, and the difficulties and risks incurred by attempting major operations on critical services. We recently experienced problems with one such deployment where the host had either become too corrupt or too old to host the upgrade to vCenter 6.  Before we could go ahead with that upgrade procedure, we needed to refresh the host underneath a production vCenter host. We did it in just under 4 hours, including commissioning/testing software.”
